The Australian Women's Weekly - Celebrating 75 Years as an Australian Icon

We Want: Celebration; Success; Confidence

Some heartfelt wishes from old and new friends...

As we celebrate all things Australian with our 75th birthday, some of our favourite celebrities join us in wishing The Weekly a happy birthday and remember the magazine as an influential, inspirational and loved iconic Australian.

I think The Weekly is as Australian as Vegemite. And ever since I have been eating Vegemite, there's always been a copy of The Weekly around - and I've been eating Vegemite since I was three. My mother always had a copy of The Weekly. She loved the recipes and the knitting patterns, and she relied on it to keep up with what the royals were doing. So The Weekly was always around our house when I was growing up. And it still is - Therese buys The Weekly and my daughter, Jess, buys it, too. A very happy 75th birthday to The Weekly. It is an Australian institution, an Australian icon and, as I said before, as Australian as Vegemite."

Happy birthday! To make it to 75 as a human being, let alone as a magazine, is an impressive achievement. I think it's nice when things like that are staples in our life - iconic images that stick around. In this crazy world, it's very comforting that they're still there."

It's an incredible success story - the tale of a simple home life magazine that has become an Australian icon. Happy birthday, Women's Weekly! Congratulations on growing and evolving, and never resting on your considerable laurels."

Right up there with football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars, The Australian Women's Weekly is one of this country's great icons. In our family, we have four generations of Weekly readers and, in fact, it's the first magazine I ever remember reading. From the extraordinary role it played in supporting women through World War II, to man landing on the moon, the devastation of Cyclone Tracy, Shane Gould and Susie O'Neill's medal-winning moments, and the royals we could never quite get enough of, The Weekly has always been there to help us see it all. As the song says, it just wouldn't be the same without The Weekly. Congratulations and many, many happy returns."

I love The Weekly... I always feel in safe hands when I'm interviewed for its pages, so I know I can trust the quality of all its stories. In a magazine market that has been heavily tempted down the gossip path, you really can buy The Weekly for the articles. Long may she reign."

  • Liz Hayes

The Weekly is a bit like a great girlfriend... dependable, interesting, willing to share some secrets and always welcome."

  • Bert Newton

I grew up with The Weekly, courtesy of my dear late mum, Gladys. During the 1940s and '50s, I followed the adventures of Mandrake the Magician in each edition of this great magazine. How could I have known I would one day finish up on the front cover, more than once? Happy 75th birthday! I'm only five years younger and counting!"

Happy birthday! Just like the recipes you're famous for, The Australian Women's Weekly always guarantees a cup and a half of stories, marinated in glamorous fashion with just a pinch of gossip! The Weekly has entertained my mother, grandmother and the tradition continues with me. Thank you!"

What an amazing milestone for a glorious beauty, who has maintained her dignity, style and relevance. She has seen war and peace, rock and roll, and guided generations with sensitivity and understanding, while maintaining a competitive edge. Her honesty has been painful when she laid bare some tough stories about our real lives. The Australian Women's Weekly has invited me to grace a few covers and was gracious enough to light me well, be kind and forgive my flaws. Now, that's a friend!"

As someone who also recently celebrated her 75th birthday, here is one of my main tips for a good life. Every day, do something that makes your heart dance. It could be picking up the phone to an old friend, it could be giving a warm smile to your loved ones, or helping someone less fortunate than you. It could be spreading the message of peace and love. None of these things cost money and all of them can help make our world a better place. Plant a seed and watch it grow! Congratulations on your birthday."

Happy anniversary Australian Women's Weekly. A heartfelt congratulations. Just like diamonds are a girl's best friend, so too is The Australian Women's Weekly. You have always been a part of my life and always will be. You are my monthly Australian digest of who's who, what's happening and how lucky we all are to be Australian women."

It was the one magazine my mother always seemed to have. It was large, colourful, glamorous and always managed to be a marvellous slice of Australian life, the kind of life the average Australian family led and the extraordinary lives of others. The Weekly made you feel part of the landscape and it had an uncanny knack of always being worthwhile. It continues to be. Happy birthday, Australian Women's Weekly."

Happy birthday, The Australian Women's Weekly, and thank you for being my bedtime reading guilty secret. I often fall asleep musing on which diet to have a crack at next, how to get creative with eggplants and whether Pilates is really for me. Keep up the good work, dears!"

I had 15 very happy, challenging years as Fashion Editor of The Weekly. At first, I found it tricky to come to terms with the do's and don'ts of the magazine, but quickly I found The Weekly girls, from the editor to the tea lady, all amazingly helpful and friendly. [They] quietly and efficiently guided me through the ropes and, within a very short time, I felt part of The Weekly family. Over the years, I've come to the conclusion that that's what sets The Weekly apart - whether you're a contributor or a reader you feel part of the family. Historically, The Weekly has had one hell of a ride and more than just survived - it's thrived."

The Australian Women's Weekly has been at the top of its game now for 75 years. It has remained a cut above other magazines of its ilk because of its integrity and honest reporting. It's a celebrity-driven format that doesn't slip into the murky depths of poor journalism for the sake of a headline - a near-impossible task."

  • Melissa Doyle

I have grown up with The Australian Women's Weekly. It's as much a part of our culture as bikinis and lamingtons. I truly felt I had graduated to womanhood when I finally started buying it for myself - instead of pinching Mum's - and using the recipes to feed my own family. Happy birthday and congratulations on reaching such a wonderful milestone."

Happy 75th birthday! I am so proud to have been a part of your magazine and its history. It was a pleasure to bring you to my home town of Vancouver for my story. So it's time to celebrate The Weekly - bring in the big band and thanks for making your readers feel good!"

For anyone growing up in this country, you have been an institution. You have delighted us with your world exclusives, kept us informed about the royals, shown us the latest fashion trends and taught us how to cook. Thank you - you have been a guiding light, a true superstar! Happy 75th birthday - may you continue to show us the way."

  • Ray Martin

The Weekly came in every Friday, on the mail truck from Tumut - along with the bread and groceries. It was my mum's only contact with the outside world, an escape from two small kids and her School of the Air duties. It was 1950 and we lived high up in the Snowy Mountains, in a long forgotten village called Yarrangabilly. My father was a fitter and turner on the Snowy scheme, who only came home once a month. Without The Weekly, my mum used to say she'd have to be committed. I think she was joking... maybe not."

Of course, The Weekly is ageless - like any great lady - but I compliment you on being able to satisfy so many generations of readers for so long and never conceding to anything beneath your dignity. You're a role model that my family, for several generations, are honoured to be associated with. Happy birthday, gorgeous girl!"
